Is PLC an outdated field? Is there still scope in it?

Picture

PLC are made to suit the rugged industrial environment with good debugging capabilities and a standardized programming structure. More on THAT :- LINK

PLC, HMI and SCADA is not an outdated field, even now a days it has become the backbone of manufacturing industries, oil and gas industries, waste water treatment industries etc.

Apart of PLC, Some organizations are using DCS system, therefore if any body wants to make his career in automation he must have the knowledge of followings;

  1. Knowledge of technology based on your B.Tech/dip branch eg. (EE/ME/EC).
  2. PLC( at list you should be comfortable to work on three to four PLCs).
  3. SCAD software.
  4. HMI.
  5. Drives/Motors.
  6. CAD and Panel designing.
  7. DCS system.

There are so many organization who provides training on Industrial Automation, but be careful while choosing them, before joining be aware about their training methodology/course content, because if they are going to provide you maximum theoretical portion that would not help you to get enter into automation career.

Automation Engineer must be practically comfortable to do programming independently with different kinds of PLC, able to make good communication with SCADA/HMI software.

Most of the organization are not well taking care about practical session of PLC and panel designing, hence be very careful about that particular training.

Some Examples of Automation Training Provider are;

  1. FMM(Federation of Malaysian Manufacturer) : A training provider institute registered under HRDF, very good training with hands on practical based, you can implement your knowledge with project work, because that is included in their course curriculum. At the end of the course they will provide training certificate which recommended in Malaysia.

  2. NSSDC (Negeri Sembilan Skill Development Centre) : is a joint project initiated by the State Government and a group of private industries in Negeri Sembilan. The main aim is to provide a total learning solution for the industries and acts as a platform to facilitate the promotion of Technical Skill and Management Skills for occupational competence.

  3. Griffin Solution : Third Party Training provider, all the trainings and development activity which undertake will have a positive impact on the future performance on our client business. Griffin will provide inspiring training that motivate individuals to achieve their full potential there by helping our clients achieve their corporate goals. HRDF Registered Training Provider.

    and so on...

Is there a bright scope after industrial automation (PLC) Programmable Logic Controller training?

Picture

Difference Between SCADA and HMIA programmable logic controller, PLC is a digital computer which works on a software to a make any automatic  electromechanical operations/processes like control of machinery on  factory assembly lines, amusement rides, or light fixtures in the industries such as Automobile factory, Steel Industry, Power generation  industry, Paint shop, Packaging line, Bakery etc.

As Industries adopt automation technologies to achieve-
  1. Repeat accuracy in the function/process.
  2. Adhering strict delivery schedules .
  3. Reduction in human errors.
  4. Less dependence on labor.
  5. International quality standards.

Industrial automation refers to application of various control systems to operate equipment in factories or other manufacturing units. Today, industrial automation is used for operating several factories, machinery, heat treating boilers and ovens, steering and ship stabilization, switching on telecom networks, aircraft's and related applications, and automotive assemblies. Over several years and with incredible investment in research and development, the global industrial automation market has evolved to reduce the burden of labor on humans.

According to the research report, the global industrial automation market is anticipated to reach a valuation of US$352.02 bn by the end of 2024 from US$182.64 bn in 2015. Between the forecast years of 2016 and 2024, the global market is expected to expand at a CAGR of 6.6%.

The various industrial automation technologies available in the global market are distributed control system (DCS), programmable logic control system (PLC), machine vision system, manufacturing execution system (MES), human machine interface (HMI), supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA), product lifecycle management (PLM), plant asset management, computer numerical control (CNC) routers, electronic control units (ECU), and other automation types including safety system, variable frequency drive and operating training simulator.

So  you will find automation in each & every industry irrespective of  its size. As the demand of automated machines is on rise, you will find  increase in manufacturers of such machines & plants.

Now, the  user & manufacturer of automated systems require engineers to  design, maintain & modify such systems. So ideally every industry  needs such automation engineers.

PLC & SCADA are also used in the Stackers, Reclaimers, Ship loaders and Conveyor Belt Systems which are used in Ports and Mines industry.

Whenever any industry wants to employ engineers they prefer automation engineers rather than just typical degree/diploma engineers.

Now u can imagine the job opportunities in Automation sectors in Malaysia, u just need to find a right one.

What is the future scope of PLC and SCADA?

Manufacturing Industries
Future Scope of PLC
PLCs are continuously growing and evolving to be the best option for a variety of industrial automation applications. Scope of plc programming is increasing rapidly because of greater programming flexibility and ease, scalability, more memory, smaller sizes, very high-speed (gigabit) Ethernet, and built-in wireless features.

Programmable Logic Controller smoothens the mechanical automation process in manufacturing units and construction buildings.

Due to its dynamic development, sequential control, counters and timers, ease of programming, reliable controlling capabilities, and ease of hardware usage; Programmable Logic Controllers are also utilized in various control system areas.

Future Scope of SCADA

A SCADA system allows equipment across multiple locations to be monitored and controlled from a central location. The equipment may be located within a building, a factory, throughout a city, country or even across an entire region.

The global SCADA market is a well-defined and well-established market space that has been showing promising growth trends in recent years.

PLC SCADA systems have great programming flexibility along with high speed communication, larger number of I/O handling capability, small sizes and larger memory. Therefore, it is the best option for industrial automation applications these days and in future as well.

How much does a PLC/SCADA programmer earn?

Picture
It depends on three factors:
  1. Your Experience.
  2. Your company.
  3. Your Project location /Kind of Projects.
  4. If you are fresher in Malaysia working under System Integrator/System House you can expect between RM4000-RM8000 and it’s totally based on other 2. & 3. factors.

If your company is local business then you will get lesser pay but if they do specialize some highly paid business which is under my 3rd point you can expect more.If your company is exporting you for other MNC/outside country you will get hike.

Project location or Project type matters. If you are working in a high volume project like OIL & Gas, Steel/Power/Mining you should expect more or Testing as per some standard then expect more which only happen with very few company. You always get paid more if you are at site than in your local office. Pay varies from 26.00 USD to 60.00 USD per hour for site projects or high volume projects. You need to negotiate your strengths more than your weakness to get good pay.

Good Job! Good Pay!
